|
Updated 09/10/2008 - An informative article on spiders, spider bites, and First Aid treatments for spider
bites for the SCA Chirurgeon. Due to considerations of scope and length this article is limited to spiders
considered clinically significant within the United States, including the Black Widow (genus Latrodectus),
the Brown Recluse and it's Kin (genus Loxosceles,) the Yellow Sac Spider (genus Cheiracanthium,)
and the Hobo Spider (Tegenaria agrestis.) A copy of this article should be sent with anyone suspected
of having received a spider bite.

Heat Injuries and Fluid Management in the SCA

The major concerns working with Fighters during the warmer months are helping them keep
safe from heat injuries and keeping them well hydrated. This missive will discuss how to
keep your cool despite the heat. |

ID Cards
|
For safety reasons, there should be a way to notify the chirurgeon or other rescuers that
you have a significant medical condition in the event that you were incapacitated and unable
to tell them yourself. |

On Concussion
|
A concussion is the most common head injury in contact sports, including SCA heavy
combat. You are probably more likely to have a non-fighter with a concussion from
accidents at the event site, though this article will deal primarily with fighters
as they are unique for wanting to return to the same activity that got them clonked
in the first place.

On the Proper Use of Gloves
|
Despite the emphasis on personal protection and concern with blood and body fluid
contact, I still see the improper use of gloves by everyone from first-aiders to
infectious disease and public health specialists. Improper glove use puts both
the care provider and their patients at risk for acquiring any one of the many
blood-borne illnesses.

On Rehydration
|
There has been a long-standing argument about how to properly hydrate during SCA
activities. There are proponents of everything from pure water up through
full-strength sports drinks with various additives. While the Ether sings with
the debate and sports drink companies rake in the guineas, recent studies have
thrown some light on this arcane topic.

On Service (or, "How in blazes did this Baldric get so heavy?")
|
How *did* this baldric get so heavy? The minds way of handling the weight of responsibility I
suppose. “Can I do this?” I ask, and you find out you can. For at the end of the day, if all has
gone well and you have done your best, your little questioning voice speaks up again. “Yes, you
can do this after all.” |

OTC Meds in the SCA
|
Apparently, it is common in many corners of the Known World for Chirurgeons to act as if they
don’t know that they are providing OTC meds. This gives the impression that the Chirurgeon is
doing something shady and less than legal. Let’s see what the Society Chirurgeon’s Handbook
(Jan 2004) has to say about medications: |

Pennsic 35 FAQ
|
The Chirurgeonate as a whole has expressed deep concern and distress over the events that
arose at Pennsic 35. Repeated requests have been made for more information about incidents
that occurred to trigger the suspension of Chirurgeonate supervision of First Aid triage and
coordination. |

Wound Care
|
One of the more common injuries seen at an SCA event is an open wound. The causes are
legion, from such divers events as armor bite, kitchen clumsiness, camping klutzes, and dizzy
dancers. |
